Workshop: Biofuels from Waste

The current hype for biofuels builds on the availability of land resources. However, forests and agricultural land are limited, thus the production of biofuels is competing with food production and biodiversity. An alternative feedstock for the production of biofuels would be biogenic waste and residues that are available without consuming additional land area. For example in countries like Switzerland, the estimated potential of waste feedstock is even larger then the potential of energy crops. Within this workshop future chances and risks of biofuel production from waste should be discussed. Some of the questions addressed will be:

Which waste fractions have the highest potential for fuel production?
What are the most efficient conversion technologies for biogenic waste from an environmental/economic perspective?
Should biogenic waste rather be used for fuel production or for co-generation?
What is the future role of waste in facing the global energy crisis?
